How to Calculate Equity in Poker
Equity is a frequency dressed up as a percentage: run the hand against the range across every remaining card combination, and equity is the share of those runouts your hand wins or splits. A 62% equity hand isn't a hand that wins 62% of one showdown — it's a hand that wins roughly 62 times per 100 runouts, or about 8-to-5 in odds terms. All three formats describe the same number; use whichever one you'll actually act on.
- Write the opponent's range in grid notation — this calculator assumes you can already do that
- Enter your two (or four, in Omaha) cards
- Set the board cards if you're pricing a postflop spot, or leave it preflop
- Read equity as percent, then convert mentally to odds or per-100 if that's your working unit
- Compare that number to the pot odds you were actually facing to price the decision, not just the hand
Hand vs Range: A Worked Example
Take A♥K♥ against a cutoff range of 77+, ATs+, KQs, AJo+ on a dry ace-high board. The calculator returns equity in the low 30s — call it 32%, or roughly 8-to-17, or 32 times per 100 runouts. That number prices the showdown; it doesn't price the decision on its own, because a bet size changes the equity you need to continue.
