Pot Odds in Poker: How to Calculate and Use Them
A bet is a price tag. Pot odds are how you read that tag before you decide whether the call is worth making. You already know how to count your outs and rough out a draw's percentage, so this piece picks up from there and turns that percentage into a decision: call, fold, or raise, priced in the actual chips sitting in front of you. What Pot Odds Actually Measure
Pot odds compare the size of the pot to the size of the call you're facing. If there's $80 in the pot and your opponent bets $20, you're being asked to put in $20 for a shot at $100. That's a 5-to-1 price. Win once every five tries and you break even; win more than that and the call turns a profit over time.
That ratio doesn't tell you anything about your hand on its own. It's a price, and a price only matters next to what you think you're buying: your equity, the share of the pot you expect to win. Pot odds without equity is a number with no use. Put the two together and you have a decision.
How Pot Odds Work at the Table
Here's the mechanism, stripped down. Every call risks a fixed amount to win a fixed amount: the current pot plus whatever your opponent just bet. Pot odds convert that risk-reward pair into a single breakeven equity, the minimum percentage of the time you need to win the hand for the call to be worth making over many repeats of the same spot.
I'll give any probability in three forms, because each one is useful in a different moment: as a percent for quick comparison, as a ratio for the pot-to-call math, and as a frequency per 100 hands for judging whether a mistake actually costs you anything over a real sample. A 25% breakeven equity is the same thing as 3-to-1 pot odds, and the same thing as needing to win roughly 25 times out of every 100 times you're in that exact spot.
How to Calculate Pot Odds Step by Step
The arithmetic behind calculating pot odds has three steps, and none of them require more than addition and division.
- Add the call to the current pot to get the total pot after you call: pot plus bet plus your call.
- Divide the size of your call by that total pot. That fraction is your breakeven equity as a percent.
- Compare that percent to your actual equity, the win percentage you already know how to estimate from your outs.
Here's a pot odds example worked through in full. Pot is $60, opponent bets $30. You'd be calling $30 to win a total pot of $120 ($60 plus $30 plus your $30 call). Breakeven equity is 30 divided by 120, or 25%. As a ratio, that's 3-to-1: risk one unit to win three. If your draw runs at 30% equity, the call is priced correctly and then some. If it's sitting at 18%, the call loses money over time even though it might win this particular hand.

Pot Odds vs. Expected Value
Pot odds price a single call against a breakeven line. Expected value, or EV, goes a step further and puts a number on the decision itself: the average result in chips if you played this exact spot many times over. EV prices a decision. It never forecasts an income, and no calculator, mine included, can tell you what you'll actually win this week.
The formula is simple once pot odds are in hand: EV equals (equity times amount won) minus ((1 minus equity) times amount risked). Take the earlier example at 30% equity calling $30 into a $120 total pot. EV = (0.30 x $90) - (0.70 x $30) = $27 - $21 = plus $6. Priced across 100 repeats of that exact spot, the call is worth roughly 600 chips, or 6bb per 100 occurrences at $1 stakes. That's an average, not a promise.
Good Pot Odds and When to Call
"Good pot odds" just means the price is cheap relative to what's on offer: a small bet into a large pot, which lowers your breakeven equity and widens the range of hands worth continuing with. A half-pot bet needs about 25% equity to call. A bet the size of the full pot needs 33%. An overbet of double the pot pushes that closer to 40%. The bigger the bet relative to the pot, the more equity the call demands.

Why Pot Odds Matter More Than Gut Feel
Why are pot odds important? Because a hand that feels wrong can still be the correct call, and a hand that feels right can still be a losing one, once you price it. A player calling on feel is pricing every decision at whatever number their nerves supply that day. A player who runs the pot-to-call ratio is pricing the decision the same way every time, which is the only way to know, across a large enough sample, whether a habit is actually making or losing money.
I spent years pricing uncertainty for a living before I ever sat at a poker table, first in mortality tables, later on a sportsbook's trading floor. The lesson carries over directly: a correct probability and a price that survives contact with real money are not automatically the same thing. Pot odds are the tool that keeps the two aligned, hand after hand.
Where Pot Odds Stop and Other Math Starts
Pot odds only price the bet directly in front of you. They say nothing about the betting still to come on later streets, which is where implied odds and reverse implied odds take over, crediting or discounting a call for the extra chips you might win or lose after this street resolves. A Quick Word on Does the Call Count
One detail trips up a lot of players doing this by hand: does your own call get added to the pot before you divide? Yes. The pot odds calculation prices the call against the total pot after everyone, including you, has put their chips in, not against the pot as it stood the instant before you acted. Leave your own call out of the total and every breakeven number you produce reads too favorable.
