Poker Ranges Explained: Reading and Building Ranges
You already play a hand. It's time to play a range instead. A poker range is the full set of hands your opponent — or you — could hold in a given spot, weighted by how likely each one is, not the single hand you're guessing at. I used to grade exams where a student solved for one variable and called it finished, missing that the real answer was a distribution. Reading poker ranges works the same way: the player who thinks in one hand loses to the player who thinks in forty. What Counts as a Poker Range (and What Doesn't)
A poker range definition sounds simple until you try to write one down. Your opponent open-raises from the button. What could they have? Not "a strong hand" — that's a feeling, not a range. A range is a list: 77+, ATs+, KJo+, and so on, each combo carrying a weight based on how often a thinking player takes that action with it.
Ranges replace guessing with structure. When you say "he's tight," you've described a personality. When you say "he opens roughly 18% of hands from the cutoff," you've described a range you can actually play against. That second sentence is the one that wins money.
Why Thinking in Ranges Beats Thinking in Hands
Putting someone on one exact hand fails for a boring reason: you're almost always wrong, and being wrong with total conviction is worse than being right-ish with a range. A range absorbs your uncertainty instead of hiding it. If you decide he has exactly AK, you'll misplay every hand that isn't AK — which is most of them.
Range thinking also lets you separate two questions beginners tangle together: what does he have, and what does he do with it. Once you hold both in mind at once, bluff-catching and value-betting stop being guesswork and start being arithmetic.
Polarized vs. Linear: The Two Range Shapes You'll See Constantly
A polarized range is built from two extremes with the middle cut out — the nuts and bluffs, nothing in between. A three-bet from the big blind after everyone folds to a button open is often polarized: premium hands for value, weak suited hands as bluffs, medium-strength hands just call or fold instead. A poker linear range, by contrast, runs one continuous block from the top down — 88+, AJs+, KQs and nothing skipped. Opening ranges from early position tend to be linear because there's no one left to bluff off the hand yet.
Here's the drill: you face a river check-raise from a player who only ever check-raises polarized. What two hand types just walked into the pot, and which one are you never supposed to call? Hold that answer — you'll want it before you act, not after.

Notice the gap: nothing between JJ and QQ is 3-bet for value — that's the polarization.
Range Advantage: Who's Actually Favored on This Board
Range advantage measures whose entire range performs better on a given board, not whose specific two cards look prettier. The preflop raiser usually holds range advantage on a K-Q-7 flop because more of their range contains big cards; the caller usually holds it on 7-6-4 because more of their range contains connected middle cards. Range advantage and nut advantage aren't the same idea — you can have more strong hands overall while your opponent has more of the very best hands, and betting big with a range that's ahead on average but thin at the top is how a lot of stacks get lost.
I believe the single fastest skill upgrade for a mid-stakes grinder isn't memorizing more combos — it's asking "whose range likes this board more?" before checking the cards in your own hand at all.
How to Read a Poker Range Chart
A poker range chart is a 13-by-13 grid, one cell per starting-hand combination, usually color-coded by action: raise, call, fold, and sometimes a mixed shade for hands that do more than one thing at different frequencies. Pairs run along the diagonal, suited hands sit above it, offsuit below. Reading one is mechanical once you know the layout — find your hand's cell, read the color, done.
What trips people up isn't the grid, it's the mixed cells. A cell that's 70% raise and 30% fold isn't telling you to guess — it's telling you the solver found both actions roughly break-even and the exact split barely matters at the table. My one always-do rule for mixed cells below master-class stakes: round to the nearer whole action and play it as pure. That shortcut costs a few tenths of a big blind per hundred hands in theoretical value — money you were never going to capture anyway while four-tabling tired. How to Construct Your Own Range, Street by Street
Building a poker range starts before the flop and narrows on every street. Start with a realistic preflop opening range for the position and action facing you. Then, on each new card, ask which combos in that range still make sense given what's happened — a check, a bet, a raise all cut the range differently. By the river, a range that started forty hands wide might be four hands wide, and that narrowing is the entire skill.
Don't build your own range as "whatever I'd actually play" while imagining your opponent's as "whatever a textbook says." Use the same standard both directions. If you wouldn't call a three-bet with king-jack offsuit, don't leave it in your own range on paper — and don't assume your opponent left it in theirs either.
Memorizing Ranges Without Drowning in Them
You cannot memorize a full solver output and you shouldn't try. What you can memorize is shape: this spot is polarized, that one is linear, this button open is roughly a third of hands, that three-bet range is mostly suited broadways and a handful of small pairs. Shapes transfer across stakes and opponents. Exact frequencies to the decimal don't — reciting one from memory at the table is a good way to sound precise while being wrong, because table conditions rarely match the solver's exact assumptions anyway.
Repetition against real spots beats flashcard memorization of static charts, because ranges live inside decisions, not in isolation.
